Modular Synthesis Introduction
In this section we explore the wild west of synthesis methods; modular synthesis. Specifically we’ll try to understand the relationship (historical context) between Modular and Subtractive (section 4). The two are integrally linked and one could very easily make the case that the classic analog subtractive synthesizer evolved from the earlier modular behemoths.
I personally find that starting with a blank slate makes the synthesis learning process easier and more rewarding. Modular is all about starting with nothing and building up into something. This week I'll help you develop a strong foundation in modular synthesis. An additional benefit of laying the foundation this week is that next week we can get into all the finer details of virtual analog subtractive synths (of which there are dozens) without worrying about nomenclature, signal flow, or the bare bones basics of synthesis.
