Frequency Modulation (FM) Introduction
Of all our synthesis methods frequency modulation will, unfortunately, have to remain the most theoretical. Programing an FM synth from scratch with the goal of emulating a real world acoustic instrument is incredibly difficult. There are literally only a handful of people who can do it well. That being said, anyone can make interesting and useable “synth” sounds with frequency/phase modulation once they understand the basic premise of the method. In this introductory video we’ll talk about the evolution and development of FM synthesis. From John Chowning to the Yamaha DX-7 to Native Instruments FM-8.
